Strike: UNIOSUN VC threatens to sack workers
The Vice Chancellor of the Osun State University, Prof.Bashiru Okesina, has threatened to sack all drivers of the varsity who joined other workers to embark on an indefinite strike over non-payment of hazard allowance and other entitlements.
The threat was contained in an internal memo signed by the Registrar of UNIOSUN, Dr. Olusakin Faniran, and dated September 2.
The memo sighted on the campus on Wednesday stated that all drivers of the institution were contract employees and were not allowed to join the strike. The management asked them to resume work or consider themselves sacked from the institution.
The memo read in part, “The management has noted that all the drivers on contract appointment have abandoned their duties with effect from Wednesday, August, 21, 2013. The affected drivers should note that the law on no-work no-pay will normally be applied against those who abandoned their duties.
“All contract drivers are being advised to resume work latest by 8am, Wednesday, September 4, 2013 failing which they should regard themselves as having voluntarily withdrawn their services from the university.”
But the Chairman of the Non Academic Staff Union, Mr. Isaiah Fayemi, and the Chairman of the National Association of Academic Technologists, Mr. Ishmaheel Adeleke, while addressing the workers on strike over the unpaid allowances, vowed not to be cowed by the threat.
They warned the vice chancellor and the university management to desist from threatening the workers saying this would not work.
Fayemi said, “The university management should stop the harassment and the intimidation tactics they are using because it won’t work. We will not suspend this strike until our demands are met. They should stop this, if they can’t harass members of ASUU who have been on strike for months, do they think we will succumb to their threats? No way! Their threats will fail.”
