A court in Sudan has found a woman guilty of apostasy after she left Islam to marry a Christian, and has given her a death sentence.
“We gave you three days to recant but you insist on not returning to Islam. I sentence you to be hanged to death,” said the judge to Meriam Yehya Ibrahim Ishag.
Ishag is currently 8 months pregnant, and the sentence will not be carried out until 2 years after she has given birth.
The judge also sentenced her to 100 lashes after convicting her of adultery – because her marriage to a Christian man was not valid under Islamic law.
Many human rights groups have come to her aid, demanding that Sudan respect her right to choose a religion
