Minister Applauds Flamingoes on World Cup Last-8 Berth
The Honourable Minister of Sports and Chairman of the National Sports Commission (NSC) Dr. Tammy Danagogo has congratulated Nigeria’s women’s cadet team, Flamingoes, on their qualification to the quarter-finals of the ongoing Fifa Under-17 World Cup in Costa Rica.
In the statement signed by the Chief Press Secretary to the Honourable Minister, an elated Dr. Danagogo, who stayed awake to watch the girls beat Columbia said, “On behalf of our President, Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, the NSC and an appreciative nation, I congratulate our players, the technical crew and the NFF on this fantastic achievement.”
The Flamingoes came from a goal down to defeat Colombia 2-1 into the last-eight of the biennial championship.
Goals from Joy Bokiri and Uchenna Kanu ensured Nigeria victory, after the Colombians had taken the lead in the third minute through Angie Rodriguez.
The win put paid to the South Americans’ hopes of reaching the last-eight of the competition after previous 4-0 loss to Mexico, who now advance into the next round of the competition alongside Nigeria, with the qualified duo set for a final group tie to decide the group winner
