Senate Approves Emefiele As New CBN Governor
The Senate has confirmed yesterday the appointment of the new Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) governor, Godwin Emefiele.
Emefiele will replace Lamido Sanusi, who was suspended by President Goodluck Jonathan on charges of “financial recklessness and misconduct”, while some are sure the case was politicized.
The appointment was approved unanimously, after which the Senate president David Mark said:
“Emefiele will ensure the prerequisite responsibilities of the central bank governor without fear or favour.”
It would be recalled that Sanusi was suspended soon after he had accused the state-owned oil company of corruption, which statement contained in the leaked letter.
His suspension came just several months before the legal end of his 5-year-term (June).
Zenith Bank boss Emefiele’s emergence as a candidate became surprising for the market watchers who said he was a low-profile, conservative figure who was unlikely to rock the boat.
